Gayle Conelly Manchin, the former West Virginia secretary of education and wife of Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), said Tuesday that she believes she will see "some good things" happen in Appalachia in the coming years.

Manchin, who is now the head of an Appalachian regional economic development organization, said she is optimistic about the region's future.

"We have the capacity here in Appalachia to create something really special," Manchin said. "We have the natural resources, the people, and the culture. We just need to bring it all together."

Manchin said she is working to bring together businesses, government agencies, and community groups to create a plan for economic development in the region.

"We're going to focus on things that we can do to make Appalachia a more attractive place to live, work, and raise a family," Manchin said. "We want to create jobs, improve education, and make sure our communities are safe."
